The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Outpatient Forensic Psychologist. Under supervision of the Community Forensic Director, the successful candidates float within assigned sections of the state and will be responsible for assisting outpatient evaluation teams and inpatient forensic hospitals in the completion of forensic evaluations.

Knowledge of abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, pertinent statutes and case law related to the practice of forensic psychology, malingering assessment tools, intellectual testing, personality assessment, best practices in mental health treatment, and ethical/professional guidelines for the practice of forensic psychology is required.

Job duties include the completion of face-to-face forensic mental health evaluations to determine competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, and violence risk; report preparation; expert testimony; data collection and analysis; supervision; and related work as assigned. Juvenile forensic (competency, waiver, etc.) evaluations may also be assigned. The work requires travel to various areas of the state. Completion of the state’s Competency to Stand Trial Certification process within one year of hire is required for continued employment.

Qualifications:

Doctorate degree in clinical or counseling psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited college or university AND current Georgia license to practice psychology AND One year of experience at the lower level Psychologist 1 (HCP140) or equivalent. Note: License may be temporary, provisional, or permanent.


Psychologist – Community Based Intake & Evaluation

Description:

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) serves people of all ages who have an intellectual disability or defined closely related developmental disabilities (such as autism, cerebral palsy, and seizure disorder), and those with additional dual diagnoses (ID and other psychiatric disorders).

The main office for DBHDD is located in downtown Atlanta. DBHDD has regional offices throughout the state, including five regional hospitals. This position is funded in the Region 2 Field Office operating out of Augusta, GA, although some travel to counties throughout the state is expected.

*The selected candidate can work from home for document review, report writing, and development of trainings. Equipment and supplies are provided, and the selected candidate will be reimbursed for mileage and reasonable travel expenses. Direct bill for car rental/motel available. All test equipment and supplies provided. Laptop and cell phone provided. The selected candidate will not be required to live in Augusta, GA.

Job Description

The psychologist is required to either review documentation to determine eligibility for Intellectual/ Developmental Disability waiver services with a records review consult report, or to conduct evaluations/testing when needed to write a psychological evaluation report. Consultation or evaluation reports must explain and justify eligibility findings according to DBHDD report format protocols. One of the primary roles for this position will be to assist in work overload from the various regions and to conduct evaluations (if necessary) throughout the state in situations in which an eligibility determination needs to be expedited. The psychologist will not be expected to conduct face to face evaluations outside of their region unless an eligibility determination needs to be expedited. Additionally, the psychologist will assist in development and presentation of trainings to be presented to the community throughout the state.

Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards

Compiles background information from referral sources, family, and the applicant, as well as from document reviews.
Appropriately administers, scores, interprets, tests, and uses appropriate methods to diagnose intellectual disability and the defined closely related developmental disabilities.
Conducts comprehensive clinical interviews.
Properly diagnoses the type and severity of the applicant’s clinical diagnoses based on accurate assessment of the presenting symptoms and problems.
Recommends decisions of diagnostic eligibility for I/DD services.
Documents psychological assessment results and treatment recommendations according to accepted practices as well as legal and department requirements.
Consults reference material such as textbooks, manuals, and journals in order to identify symptoms and behaviors to make diagnoses.
Travels to conduct evaluations throughout the state.
Appropriately researches and develops power points and other training materials with proper citations.
Travels to present training materials throughout the state of Georgia.

Technical Competencies

Knowledge of the standards, practices, and methods in applied psychology.
Knowledge of current developments and trends in the field of psychology.
Knowledge of psychological tests, tools, and techniques.
Ability to administer, score, and interpret psychological tests.
Ability to interpret statistical measures, to prepare statistical charts and graphs, and to write clear, concise reports.


Forensic Juvenile Psychologist

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities provides treatment and support services to people with mental health challenges and substance use disorders, and assists individuals who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Forensic Juvenile Psychologist will be part of the Community Forensic Services – East Team. The area covered by this team is East of Atlanta to the Georgia State line, South of Hartwell, GA, and North of Waynesboro, GA. The successful candidate will travel to points in this area as needed to conduct interviews of defendants and to testify in Court, but can work from home to complete the written reports.

The Office of Forensic Services provides forensic evaluation and treatment for individuals who are under the jurisdiction of the Superior, State, and Juvenile courts of Georgia. Forensic services complete competency to stand trial and criminal responsibility (insanity) evaluations in response to orders from Georgia superior and state courts. DBHDD also provides inpatient treatment for individuals adjudicated incompetent to stand trial or not guilty by reason of insanity who meet the criteria for inpatient treatment by a superior or state court. Finally, DBHDD provides outpatient competency restoration services and monitoring of insanity acquittees on conditional release.

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Forensic Psychologist for evaluations of juveniles in the Juvenile or Superior court systems.

Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards:
Conducts court-ordered pre-disposition forensic psychological evaluations to answer questions of competency to stand trial, treatment/dispositional needs, and waiver to/from Superior court as a neutral friend of the court.
Provides expert testimony
Collaborates with community providers for remediation of juveniles found incompetent to stand trial.
May also be involved with adult competency and responsibility evaluations.

Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications
Completion of a predoctoral internship, postdoctoral fellowship, or both with a focus in criminal forensic psychology
One year or more of post-licensure experience conducting evaluations of juveniles
Familiarity with special education services in Georgia
Familiarity with the Systems of Care model
